Men our words have power.
That’s why Jesus said, “Let your Yes be Yes and let your No be No.” He also said, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” It matters, men, what you say. Sometimes we fall right into the hands of Satan by agreeing with him. Here are the Top 10 Statements most Men, yes even Christian Men, struggle with at times.
1. SEXUAL SIN (AN AFFAIR) COULD NEVER HAPPEN TO ME
Satan would like nothing better than for you to assume and say, “Sexual sin could never happen to me.” Men it could happen to you—an affair, pornography, or any other kind of sexual sin. Paul said in I Corinthians 10:12 NLT: “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.”
Put up guardrails morally. Be accountable to another godly man. Immorality is a choice and you have the power in Christ to say “No.”
2. MY WIFE KNOWS I LOVE HER, I DON’T HAVE TO TELL HER
Some men have an aversion to saying to their wives, “I Love You.” These three words are incredibly powerful and words your wife needs to hear from your lips. You never know when you will have your last conversation with your wife. Assume that the last conversation you will have with your wife will be the final words.
3. GOD CAN’T FORGIVE ME
This statement refuses to accept God’s promise of forgiveness once he repents. God assures us from His Word that there is no sin He cannot forgive with the exception of fully and finally rejecting Jesus and dying without Him. You bring your sin to Jesus, repent, and receive the amazing grace of God.
Psalm103:12
“As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.”
1 John 1:9
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
4. I’M GOING TO HEAVEN BECAUSE MY GOOD OUTWEIGHS MY BAD
There is nowhere in Scripture that teaches one’s goodness gets him into heaven. Salvation means that God took the initiative to come to earth, live a perfect life, shed His blood on the cross, died, and then rose from the dead. Man cannot earn, deserve, or work for a relationship with God. One’s goodness helps give him a wonderful testimony to others, but it has absolutely nothing to do with forgiving your sins and saving your soul.
Ephesians 2:8-9
“God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.’’
Religion is man’s attempt to reach and be accepted by God. Christianity is God’s attempt to come to us, pay the price for our sin, and invite us to join His family.
5. MY MARRIAGE IS TOO FAR GONE TO BE SAVED
Jesus performed His first miracle at a wedding. He is still performing miracles in marriages, and He can perform one in yours. God has set out a plan in Ephesians 5 so that any marriage can change. It’s not too late, but you must begin today. Even if your wife is 99% wrong, you must work on your 1%. Seek her forgiveness if you have said or done something to hurt her or failed to do something you should have.
Maybe you have taken her for granted or not been gentle or kind enough. Maybe you have not spent enough time with her. Or it could be she is at fault and you need to surrender your right to hurt her back for hurting you.
6. I NEVER STRUGGLE WITH LUST
If you are a man, you struggle with lust, some more than others and some less than others, but let’s not kid ourselves. Every man, including Christian men, are daily bombarded with sexual images through media. If a man suggests he doesn’t struggle with sexual lust, he will lie about other things too.
I John 2:16
“For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father but are from this world.”
Job 31:1
“I made a covenant with my eyes not to look with lust at a young woman.”
That means daily a man must surrender himself to Jesus Christ, admit that it is a struggle, and ask God to set him free.
7. CHRISTIANITY IS A CRUTCH
Some men see Christianity as a crutch because they are weak. But when you consider Jesus, He was the strongest man Who ever lived and endure more pain than anyone ever has. Christianity is not a crutch; it is a dependence upon God Who did something that we cannot do. The writer of Proverbs plainly tells us:
Proverbs 3:5-6
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; Do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, And He will show you which path to take.”
What some would call a crutch, we call FAITH!
8. IT’S TOO LATE FOR ME TO CHANGE
It is never too late to do the right thing. Yes, the consequences of doing the wrong thing still have to be addressed, but any man can change through the resurrection power of Jesus Christ. He changes you from the inside out.
His resurrection power gives you the power to be transformed. Will it be easy? No. However, there are millions and millions of men who have been changed because they allowed Jesus to control their lives and give them a new purpose and direction. It is Satan who is suggesting that you cannot change. It begins in your mind.
Romans 12:2 NLT
“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”
9. I DON’T HAVE TIME TO READ THE BIBLE
Many of those who criticize the Bible or say there are contradictions in the Bible have never taken the time to read all the Bible. That is intellectually dishonest. Did you know that if you take a One-Year Bible you could spend 12-15 minutes a day and in one year have read the whole Bible.
You spend that time watching commercials in your favorite ball game. How you spend your time is a choice. Choose to spend at least 12-15 minutes a day reading a Book Whose Author shows up every time you open it up and read it.
10. THIS WORLD WOULD BE BETTER OFF WITHOUT ME
Sometimes life can cave in on us and honestly can be brutal. But it’s just not true that the world would be better off without you. God has given you a unique purpose to fulfill in this life.
In the United States, roughly 38,977 men die by suicide each year, according to recent data from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Globally, estimates show over 500,000 to 700,000 men die by suicide annually, with male rates running roughly twice as high as female rates worldwide.
You have people all around you who love you and need you. Your giving up on life would destroy theirs. Seek some help. Talk with your pastor or a Christian counselor. Have an accountability partner. Suicide is a permanent action for a temporary and solvable problem.
We challenge you men, to never make these statements. Your issues may be big, but our God is bigger!
