Does Halloween Scare You as A Christian?

You May have noticed that our culture seems to go a little crazy over celebrating Halloween.

I have been asked many times if I believe Christian’s should celebrate Halloween. There is certainly a lot of controversy amongst Christian’s  during this time regarding Halloween, and although I would rather not dig into all the historical aspects of it, I thought it might be good to discuss the basics on anything distracting us from God’s purpose and will.

Here is my take on Halloween specifically for what it’s worth as a Christian.

Although Halloween in general does not appear to be something Christians should fully embrace or support, there  are a few things to think about regarding this and other Holidays that may be controversial for Christians.

We chose as a family not celebrate the demonic side of Halloween when our kids were small, but we did dress them up in non-scary costumes for the fun side and went to fall festivals and parties, etc.

So, we still had fun with it but did not celebrate the scary demonic parts.

You need to decide, if addressed correctly, is it okay for Christians to participate in certain aspects of Halloween as long as we remain mindful of our faith, our values, and what we are allowing into our homes and hearts.

There is a difference between enjoying innocent, family-friendly activities like dressing up, enjoying candy, decorating, and spending time together as a family versus embracing the darker, demonic side of Halloween.

Ephesians 5:11 reminds us, “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness.”

We also have to remember Philippians 4:8, which encourages us to focus on whatever is true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and good.

As Christians, we should be intentional about what we expose ourselves and our children to. We should not conform to the world, but be transformed by the renewing of our minds in the Word of God.

That means we don’t have to participate in everything, and we certainly shouldn’t compromise our relationship with God for the sake of a holiday or tradition.

At the end of the day, you have to decide if it’s okay to allow yourself and your children to enjoy innocent fun while keeping things wholesome, safe, and appropriate during this time of year.

It’s about knowing where to draw the line, setting boundaries, and making sure we never glorify or entertain darkness.

In any case as Christians we can enjoy the innocent moments, make memories with our families, not embrace the darkness and still stand firm in our faith.

God should always come first, and our choices should reflect that.
