Be a Benaiah: Lessons from One of David’s Mighty Men
When most people think about King David’s mighty men, they immediately think of David himself or perhaps Goliath. Yet tucked away in 1 Chronicles 11 is the remarkable story of a man every Christian should know—Benaiah.
Benaiah wasn’t famous because he sought recognition. He became known because he faithfully served God, courageously faced impossible situations, and remained loyal when it mattered most.
His life offers powerful lessons for every man who desires to follow Christ.
1. Leave a Godly Legacy
Benaiah came from a family of faithful men. His father, Jehoiada, was a priest, and his family modeled a life devoted to God.
One of the greatest gifts a father can give his children isn’t wealth or success—it’s a godly heritage.
Men, what you do today will echo into the lives of your children and grandchildren. Your faithfulness, integrity, and love for God are shaping the next generation.
2. Be a Man of Action
The name Benaiah means “Jehovah has built.” His strength, wisdom, courage, and character came from God.
Scripture describes him as a man who was “mighty in deeds.”
He wasn’t simply someone who talked about faith. He lived it.
God is looking for men who move beyond words and into action—men who lead, serve, protect, and courageously stand for truth.
3. Chase the Lion
Perhaps the most famous moment in Benaiah’s life came when he chased a lion into a pit on a snowy day—and killed it.
Think about the obstacles.
A lion.
A pit.
Snow.
Every reason to walk away.
Instead, Benaiah stepped into danger because he understood something many of us forget: the enemy never rests.
Neither should our commitment to fighting the spiritual battles that threaten our homes, marriages, and families.
There will be days when you don’t feel like praying, reading your Bible, leading your family spiritually, or standing for biblical truth.
Do it anyway.
Faithfulness isn’t determined by feelings. It’s demonstrated through obedience.
4. Fight the Right Battles
Peter warns us:
“Be sober-minded; be alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)
Our greatest battles are often fought in unseen places.
The pit of anger.
The pit of lust.
The pit of fear.
The pit of discouragement.
The pit of anxiety.
The pit of guilt.
Satan wants men to remain trapped there.
God calls us to fight.
We fight through prayer.
We fight through God’s Word.
We fight by worshiping, sharing our faith, surrounding ourselves with accountability, and refusing to compromise our convictions.
Christian men are not called to retreat.
We are called to stand.
5. Trust God’s Strength, Not Your Own
Benaiah also faced an Egyptian giant armed with an enormous spear.
Benaiah carried only a club.
Humanly speaking, he had no chance.
Yet he took the giant’s own weapon and defeated him with it.
What an incredible picture of Jesus Christ.
At the cross, Jesus took Satan’s greatest weapon—death—and defeated him forever.
As Colossians 2:15 reminds us, Christ disarmed the powers of darkness through His victory on the cross.
No giant you face is greater than the God who fights beside you.
6. Protect Your Testimony
Scripture says Benaiah earned a respected name.
His reputation carried weight because his character matched his convictions.
Men, your name matters.
Protect your integrity.
Protect your marriage.
Protect your witness.
Protect the name of Jesus through the way you live every day.
Character is built one decision at a time.
7. Stay Humble and Let God Promote You
Although Benaiah was one of David’s greatest warriors, there were others considered even mightier.
Yet Benaiah wasn’t jealous.
He remained faithful.
Because of that humility, David appointed him as captain of his personal bodyguard.
Later, Benaiah would faithfully serve Solomon as commander of Israel’s army.
God promotes faithful men.
Your responsibility isn’t to compare yourself with others.
Your responsibility is to remain faithful where God has placed you.
Stay in your lane.
Honor Christ.
Serve faithfully.
Trust God with the results.
Be a Benaiah
The world doesn’t need more passive men.
It needs courageous men.
Men who chase lions.
Men who confront evil.
Men who protect their families.
Men who remain humble.
Men who faithfully follow King Jesus.
Today, make the decision to be that kind of man.
Be a Benaiah.
